VVVVVV pulled from Nintendo eShop over 3DS hack exploit

Terry Cavanagh’s popular indie platformer VVVVVV has been removed from the Nintendo eShop amid accusations that it can enable the use of homebrew software on the handheld.

Polygon reports that the game featured in a new exploit that bypassed some of the console’s security protection. A similar scenario played out in 2014 when Ubisoft title Cubic Ninja became highly sought after following the discovery that it could be used to crack security protocols.

While VVVVVV is still listed on Nintendo’s eShop, it’s no longer possible to buy it.

Cavanagh himself was seemingly as surprised as anyone about the news. He later added that he doesn’t believe he will have to patch the game, suggesting he’s had some communication with Nintendo.
