Without Nintendo, Bayonetta 2 would be dead in the water

The idea that Nintendo has blocked the release of Bayonetta 2 on rival platforms is inaccurate.

Indeed, it transpires that without the partnership of Nintendo, Platinum Games would not have been able to greenlight the project at all.

"WouldBayonetta 2not exist without Nintendo? The answer is yes," Platinum’s executive director Atsushi Inaba told Polygon. "We are not viewing this as a change of platform. We were looking for a partner to createBayonetta 2and Nintendo was a strong, cooperative partner that was willing to create and growBayonetta 2 together [with us]. As a result the platform became the Wii U."

The developer also claims that the switch of platforms won’t impact on their overall design goals for the game, though may perhaps lead to some new ideas being introduced.

"We create the basic framework of our games on the PC, so even though the hardware changes it doesn’t influence the creation of our games,” Inaba added. We’ve already developed our own engine to work with multiple platforms.

"Because of the Wii U GamePad, we are putting extra thought into how to use these differentiating features. There’s a difference in the game design side, but we are enjoying the challenges of creating games for new hardware."

Inaba admits that his initial hope for the title was as a multiplatform release, but that was scuppered when former partner Sega decided that it was to scale back on the number of titles it publishes.

Indeed, Platinum’s last release, Anarchy Reigns, has to date only been published in Japan. It’s not certain when – or if – the game will arrive on Western shores.
