Worldwide PS4 sales pass 20m

Sony has said at GDC that total worldwide PS4 sales to consumers have now hit 20.2m units.

That’s up on the 18.5m sold by January 4th, meaning 1.7m machines have been shifted in what would normally be expected to be a quiet two months since then.

4.1m PS4s were sold between November 23rd and January 4th.

The most recent sales update for Xbox One had the console pegged at 10m units shipped as per mid-November. There has been plenty of price activity on Microsoft’s machine since then, however, including yet more discounts recently in the UK.

Both consoles were launched in November 2013.

"We are so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation fans worldwide, and we are truly humbled that gamers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play," PlayStation executive Andrew House said.

"We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver unique and interactive entertainment experiences powered by the network and the PS4 system’s deep social capabilities."
