Dark Souls Remastered apparently hinted at by Miyazaki

Remastered versions of the first two Dark Souls games could be on the cards.

From Software boss and Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki has suggested to Polygon that while Dark Souls is finished for now, future projects could be possible, although these are most likely to be ‘HD remakes’ of existing games in the series.

The famed director also reiterated that the upcoming DLC for Dark Souls 3 is very much a full stop for the series, however.

"It’s time to move away from the Dark Souls franchise," he said. "As president of From Software, I’m not completely denying the possibility of bringing back the franchise in the future. There could be someone else in my company who wants to work on new installments. But we believe that the series will end after the two DLC.

"I’m not saying I won’t work on a Dark Souls-like game or a dark fantasy game. We’d like to carry over some of the good things from the franchise to new products. As new technology is introduced, we would like to take what we learned from Dark Souls and use it in future IP."

This should not be news for anyone, as it echoes very closely comments made in April.

Dark Souls 3 will have several DLCs like previous games. But there’s absolutely no plan right now for any sequels, spin-offs or tie-ins,” he said earlier this year. I can’t say for certain the possibility is zero per cent. For example, if a From Software developer come to me five years from now and beg ‘please let me make another Dark Souls‘. Then I will not rule out the possibility to let my subordinates start a new project.

[But] what is certain for now is, to me personally Dark Souls is over. So rather than make another sequel, I think it’s time we take a step to a new direction.”

Digging the use of the word ‘subordinates, incidentally.

Going back a bit further, Miyazaki said in November last year: I don’t think it’d be the right choice to continue indefinitely creating Souls and Bloodborne games. I’m considering Dark Souls 3 to be the big closure on the series.

That’s not just limited to me, but From Software and myself together want to aggressively make new things in the future. Dark Souls 3 will mark the last game where the development project began before I became president. The next title will be a game that was conceived while I was president.

I believe that From Software has to create new things. There will be new types of games coming from us, and Dark Souls 3 is an important marker in the evolution of From Software… I just believe that [moving on] is necessary in order for players to continue enjoying our games. We have to keep creating quality games and be aggressive about doing new things.”

It may be worth noting that the tune was very different last summer, when Miyazaki said: "This is not the final product for the Dark Souls series. It’ll be a turning point, but it’s not final."
