ArenaNet tells players to use a unique log-in to improve safety

11,000 Guild Wars 2 players fall victim to hackers

Hackers have compromised more than 11,000 accounts on Guild Wars 2.

Developer ArenaNet has said it was aware of the problems having received messages of a number of accounts being accessed from a new location or computer.

More than 8,500 users had complained about being hacked over the weekend of September 1st and 2nd.

The studio said most of the 11,000 users who fell victim to hacker attacks had now gained back control of their account.

ArenaNet deflected the blame away from itself however and suggested that compromised accounts consisted of those with a similar username and password that players had used on other websites.

It suggested that users use unique login details to help to ensure the integrity of their accounts.

Guild Wars 2 is an RPG set 250 years after the original title, and uses a virtual item trade system with real-world value set to various goods.
