Social gaming engagement 'has increased 71 per cent'

120m people play social games, says PopCap

More people are playing social games than ever before, says PopCap.

The casual giant found that 71 per cent more play social games today compared to last year – 120m players in total.

Plus, the number of ‘avid’ social game players have more than doubled from seven per cent in 2010 to 15 per cent this year. These play socially online for at least six hours per week.More virtual currency is being spent, too.

Around 26 per cent of social gamers used real-life money to purchase in-game goods, compared to 14 per cent last year. That’s an 86 per cent increase and a total of 31m people.

PopCap’s senior game designer David Bishop told MCV: “We have always believed that everyone likes to play games. A wonderful thing about social gaming is the space it has created for video games – helping so many non-gamers realising that playing games is fun.”
