Support for Appleâ??s portable boosts 3D engineâ??s popularity

200 companies license Unity for iPhone

Over 200 companies have licensed Unity Technologies’ Unity Engine, after support for iPhone and iPod Touch was added to the tool.

“We’ve added great tools to Unity to make developing for the iPhone a really enjoyable experience,” said Unity Technologies’ CEO David Helgason. “Our customers are as excited about the iPhone as we are, and the ability to quickly develop high-quality games for the iPhone with the broad range of technical capabilities that Unity offers quality content is rapidly appearing.”

The engine, which allows for developing both 2D and 3D games, provides for the harnessing all of the iPhone and iPod Touch’s tilt and touch functionality, giving studios the opportunity to take advantage of creating games for the huge potential market presented by Apple’s App Store.
