Number of titles certified in the last 12 months now at 178, UK spend at £554m

90 games approved for UK games tax relief in H1 2016

The BFI has released new figures for the first six months of 2016 showing that 90 games have been certified to receive games tax relief.

The figure was spotted and applauded by trade body TIGA, which also reports that the 90 games have a combined budget of £113m. Of this, £99m – 88 per cent – will be spent in the UK.

The latest stats mean the total number of video games supported by UK tax relief in the last 12 months has risen to 178. Total budgets for these projects is £643m, with a UK spend of £554m.

“These promising stats come just two weeks after HMRC figures proved the tremendous contribution that GTR has made, not just to the UK games industry, but also to the UK economy,” said TIGA CEO Dr Richard Wilson.

“We are thrilled to see the effects of GTR but need to make sure this great UK games industry renaissance continues. We now need to build on this momentum by making GTR even more effective, looking at the level of the relief, examining the cultural test and continuing to ensure we can access highly skilled and creative talent to work in the industry.”
