Rovio opts for burgeoning social network rather than dominant platform

Angry Birds nestle into Google+ before Facebook

Perhaps the biggest coup (or coop?) of today’s introduction for Google+ is the fact the service boasts Angry Birds before Facebook.

Earlier this year, Rovio Mobile said its iconic bird physics game would launch on Facebook with new social functions.

But it quietly delayed the proposed launch from May without much explanation.

Instead, Angry Birds’ first social iteration has gone live as part of today’s Google+ roll out.

It’s a more inclusive experience than the single-player focused mobile version.

"Angry Birds on Google+ is an ongoing HTML 5 project that lets users share game updates with friends, participate in leaderboards, brag about their achievements, unlock special social levels, and invite people to play," the firm said in a statement.

But the firm will update the game the way it has on mobiles: "Following its successful mobile gaming strategy, Rovio will continually bring in exciting new features based on user feedback."

A fuller statement from CEO Mikael Hed added:“Angry Birds for Google+ Games is a great start, but it’s just our first step in social gaming. As our fans know, we constantly look for ways to update and innovate our products. We want to delight our users by going way beyond what they were expecting. Social gaming is going to be massive, and we’re very excited about what we have coming up next.”
