But the world-conquering catapult game still has life, investor claims

Angry Birds studio ready to launch new IP

The Helsinki studio that launched the iPhone sensation Angry Birds is ready launch a new IP, the company’s CEO has said.

Rovio chief Mikael Hed said the upcoming game “will be out in a couple months” though offered no further details regarding platform, concept or business model.

But in his interview with All Things Digital, Hed said Rovio still prioritises fun over monetisation, and that too many companies focus on economics over gameplay.

“Talking about ‘users’ is totally wrong,” he said.

“As long as you keep talking about users, you forget they are really human beings.”

“You are not making [things] for essentially a walking wallet,” he added.

Elsewhere in the interview, venture capitalist Rich Wong rejected claims that Rovio has become too indebted to the Angry Birds brand.

Wong, whose Accel Partners led a massive investment round in Rovio last year, said he knows of the doom-mongering from people who say the Angry Birds brand has ‘peaked’.

“The team has demonstrated the agility multiple times in finding ways to keep the brand fresh and engaging, and the numbers show it,” he said.
