As the Zelda series director hints at future evolutions of Nintendoâ??s treasured franchise

Aonuma: Miyamoto can still surprise people

Eiji Aonuma, the man Nintendo has put in charge of the Legend of Zelda series, believes that Shigeru Miyamoto can still surprise the industry with innovative ideas.

Miyamoto’s role at Nintendo has over the years become fairly ambiguous. As he gained prominence at Nintendo throughout the last two decades, he has taken the inevitable steps towards management as opposed to hands-on development.

But, says Aonuma, the iconic game designer still has the creative reserves to innovate, and “still comes up with ideas that really surprise."

And in an interview with The Guardian, Anouma spoke of the evolution of the Zelda series and made hints about the series’ future.

"I have an eight-year-old son myself at home, and quite recently he started playing The Phantom Hourglass for DS,” he said.

“When he started playing with the boat, I told him: ‘In the next Zelda, you are going to be able to ride on the train.’ He answered: ‘OK, Dad, first boat, and then train? Surely next time, Link is going to fly in the sky’…

"I just don’t know. If many people make many speculations … some of them might be correct. Right now, I have to refrain from commenting on anything."
