Autodesk acquires Arnold renderer dev Solid Angle

Solid Angle, the firm behind rendering tool Arnold, has been purchased by Autodesk.

As is standard with such deals, the terms of the buyout were not revealed.

Autodesk confirmed that the Solid Angle team would continue to work on Arnold, with the software remaining a standalone renderer for Autodesk’s products and third-party products alike. Similarly, Autodesk’s 3DS Max and Maya will retain support for other rendering solutions.

Arnold’s pricing will also remain the same.

Arnold is a global illumination and ray-tracing renderer used in both games and TV and film, with the tech having been utilised in Clash of Clans, Star Wars Battlefront, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Game of Thrones, The Martian and Ex Machina on screen.

“Efficient rendering is increasingly critical for 3D content creation and acquiring Solid Angle will allow us to help customers better tackle this computationally intensive part of the creative process,” said Autodesk SVP Chris Bradshaw.

“Together, we can improve rendering workflows within our products as well as accelerate the development of new rendering solutions that tap into the full potential of the cloud, helping all studios scale production.”
