Cloud and web service provider to work with DICE on Battlefield 3

EA acquires Swedish online tech firm ESN

EA has acquired Sweden-based online tech development studio ESN.

The Uppsala outfit has created tools such as real-time web framework Planet, HTML5 cloud tech Beaconpush and cloud voice communication service Sonar.

The studio has previously worked with both EA and DICE on Battlefield 3 social platform Battlelog, which lets users see what servers their friends are playing on and get real-time notifications on when their friends unlock new weapons or rewards through their iPhone or iPad.

ESN said it would be focusing on working with DICE on Battlelog and the Battlefield series in future.

As a result of the acquisition, the studio, which already houses 20 employees, is currently looking to hire more developers and designers to help create and maintain its online game services.
