Tool for building tools now builds more tools

Fabric Engine 2.2 adds Python support and Modo integration

Fabric Software has released the latest update to its flagship product, adding new support for the Python programming language.

The Fabric Engine, which is used to build custom standalone tools to help development teams with the specific needs of their projects, runs on a Canvas visual programming system which can now be used with Python. Previously, it required a working knowledge of C++.

The company hopes that this update will help broaden Fabric’s userbase.

CEO Paul Doyle said: “Technical directors have often asked us ‘why can’t it be just a matter of editing a few files and pushing them out into production? Why don’t you let us use Python?’ Well, we’re pleased to say that we now have.”

The firm has also teamed up with The Foundry to integrate Fabric into 3D content creation tool Modo. This means Fabric users will be able to share tools and assets with Modo. There is already support for Autodesk’s Maya and Softimage.

Fabric for Modo is compatible with Modo 901 right up to the Modo 10 series, and available for Windows, Linux and OS X.
