Shadowgun and Smash Cops revealed as launch titles

GDC 13: PlayJam secures $10m funding from GameStop

Smart TV outfit PlayJam has secured $10 million funding from GameStop.

The news follows just a couple months after the firm raised just under $650,000 on Kickstarter for its new microconsole GameStick.

The firm has previously raised around $5 million in Series A funding during October 2011, as well as £538,000 in UK government funding in May last year.

PlayJam is currently demoing a GameStick prototype for the first time at GDC, and has confirmed Madfinger and Hutch Games will be bringing Shadowgun and Smash Cops as launch titles to the device, available for free.

“We are thrilled to have some phenomenal titles to showcase what GameStick is all about – amazing games” said PlayJam CCO Charles Tigges.

“I am delighted to see many of the top selling iOS and Android titles now finding their natural home on the big screen through GameStick. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements of new games coming to the platform.”

PlayJam has also announced it has partnered with embedded TV solutions firm Amlogic to extend its Games Network to more Android-based Smart TVs

The deal means PlayJam’s Android Games Network, which also delivers content to its USB TV console GameStick, will be integrated with Amologic’s system-on-chip tech included in certain Smart TVs.

As well as partnering with Amlogic, PlayJam stated that it had recently received $10 million in venture funding from GameStop.

“Our ambition is to scale our network as far and wide as possible through partner alliances such as this,” said PlayJam CEO Jasper Smith.

“Doing so allows us to offer our developers the biggest distribution network possible whether it be via our own hardware – GameStick or 3rd party devices from Smart TV and set top boxes to the dedicated Android gaming consoles we expect to see enter the market over the coming months.”
