GDC announces Film Festival to start in 2018

The GDC conference is going to the movies. The organiser, UBM, has announced that it will launch the first ever GDC Film Festival at GDC 2018.

The festival, which will happen at the Yerba Buena Center for The Arts’ Screening Room (which is across the road from the Moscone Centre where the conference is held, will run from Monday 19th March Wednesday 21st March, during the conference.

Anyone with a GDC pass will be able to attend screenings but admission is on a first come, first served basis. In addition to the films, there will be Q&A’s on stage with game producer and journalist Mathew Kumar hosting the festival.

The festival is still looking for submissions as well. Applicants have until December 15th, 2017 to submit their film. Film-makers who are selected will also get passes to the conference as well.

Documentary filmmaking has been focusing on video games for some time. From Vice running a documentary on esports culture in Korea, to developers charting their histories and even independent film-makers creating series around the development of specific games, film-makers are turning the camera on game development. That’s not to mention historical documentaries such as Indie Games: The Movie. The festival is sure to have some interesting films

A lot of these documentaries are screened online via YouTube so it will be interesting to see how many film-makers on that platform will make the leap to a bigger screen. If you are interested in submitting, please follow the link here.
