'Play tests did flag them as a problem, but they didn't reveal the severity of it'

GDC: ‘I’m truly sorry’ for Deus Ex bosses says dev

The senior designer on Deus Ex: Human Revolution has said he is “truly sorry” about the widely criticised boss battles in the game.

As reported by Game Informer, Francois Lapikas apologised for the studio’s oversight, claiming testing did not pick up the severity of the problem with boss battles.

He said that during development the studio did not feel players would have many issues with the boss battles, intended as a break in the game’s pacing, with plenty of ammo and weapons strewn across the locations to make them easier.

“We saw them as a thing to break up the pacing more than a way to test the player’s skill,” said Lapikas

“Play tests did flag the boss fights as a problem, but they didn’t flag the severity of it.”

He added: “The boss fights were a big part of the game, and we should have put more effort into them. I’m truly sorry about that. Next time we’re going to think about it more.”
