Final update to Marmalade Game Platform scheduled for March 2017

Job losses loom as Marmalade plans to drop SDK support for games development

Marmalade Technologies is transforming its business, moving away from tools production and focusing on developing games.

GamesIndustry reports that the firm will cease support for its Marmalade Game Platform early next year and concentrate on the output of its internal games studios – a move that will require significant job losses.

The decision is part of an ongoing restructure. While a considerable number of the company’s employees are dedicated to the platform, it is not clear how many redundancies will be made at this time.

Plans for the Platform, which only relaunched in December, centre around a handful of final updates before support is dropped. Version 8.6 will be released this month, followed by 8.7 in December and 8.8 in March 2017 – after this, support will cease and Marmalade will turn off the licence server.

Developers will be able to purchase a Source edition of the Marmalade platform until October, which will include the technology’s source code, but the firm does plan to make this an open source product.

Marmalade has detailed its plans for supporting established customers on its blog.
