GDC 2014: Beta to start in three to four weeks

MonoGame free for PS4 developers

Open-source game development framework MonoGame will be free for all registered PS4 developers.

The news was confirmed to Develop by project lead Steve Williams. It had previously been suggested there may be a cost attached to the tool for PS4 support "due to the proprietary nature of console development", but this will not be the case.

The MonoGame PS4 beta will begin in approximately three to four weeks.

MonoGame is based on the Microsfoxt XNA Framework and was first tipped to come to PS4 in October last year. As well as Sony’s console, the engine is also free for iOS, Android, Mac, Linux and Windows 8.

The first PS4 title to take advantage of the engine is Matt Makes Games’ Towerfall: Ascension. Other upcoming games using the framework include Tribute Games’ Mercenary Kings and Supergiant Games’ Transistor.

Sony also recently announced that an early access version of Unity for PS4 will be available next month and that GameMaker will now be free for all PS4, PS3 and Vita developers.
