GDC Europe: And it's gestures that tell the story, says the studio behind the next Devil May Cry

Ninja Theory: ‘Story gives your game soul’

Speaking at his GDC Europe session on performance capture, Ninja Theory’s Tameem Antoniades has argued that the story of a game give the title its soul.

"People understandably don’t give as much attention to story in games," offered Ninja Theory’s ‘chief design ninja’, who has previously worked on performance capture driven games Heavenly Sword and Enslaved. "In many cases that makes sense, but if your game is story driven, everything must be based on that. It’s what gives your game its soul."

Antoniades argued that story is best delived not just through scripting and acting, but in tandem with casting, directing, staging, camera work and technology.

"It’s also amazing how much of the story is translated through gesture and not through dialogue," he concluded.

UK studio Ninja Theory is currently at work on the next installment in the Devil May Cry series.
