Images of unidentified Nintendo console testing platform circulate the web

Nintendo tests 3DS hardware?

Ported images of an FCC filing on WirelessGoodness show what seems to be the Nintendo 3DS undergoing testing on a mother board ahead of its expected release within the fiscal year.

The featured console has a widesceen display – presumably a Sharp auto-stereoscopic 3D screen – along with a 4:3 display, stero speakers, a DS cartridge slot and SD card port.

Eurogamer blog Digital Foundry noted that the hardware codename on the filing, CTR, may provide the clearest indication that the image is of a 3DS.

Every DS console has a three-letter Nintendo codename, ie the DSi is known within the company as TWL, and the DSi XL is known as UTL. CTR has not been seen before.

The FCC filing was made to seek approval for the ‘mystery’ system’s Wi-Fi card.

Nintendo plan to reveal more information on the 3DS at this year’s E3.
