“It’s not fun, and it’s not social. It’s just tech.”

Reggie Fils-Aime explains Nintendo’s anti-VR stance

While much of the industry is clamouring to take part in the rise of virtual reality, Nintendo is staunchly reluctant to get excited about the new technology.

Perhaps still smarting from the troubled Virtual Boy, or genuinely unimpressed by the likes of Oculus Rift, Project Morpheus and even Microsoft’s augmented reality tech HoloLens, the platform holder is unlikely to enter the fray with its own VR device.

Speaking to Polygon, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime admitted that while Nintendo has experimented with VR, it is not convinced the experience will be enjoyable enough for the end users.

“We have knowledge of the technical space, and we’ve been experimenting with this for a long, long time,” he said. “What we believe is that, in order for this technology to move forward, you need to make it fun and you need to make it social.

“I haven’t walked the [E3 expo] floor, so I can’t say in terms of what’s on the floor today, but at least based on what I’ve seen to date, it’s not fun and it’s not social. It’s just tech.”

Guess that rules out NX being some sort of virtual reality device.
