Sony launches PlayStation Mobile SDK

Sony has launched its PlayStation mobile developer program and SDK.

The SDK, which allows developers to create cross-platform titles for the PS Vita as well as selected Android mobile and tablet devices, will cost $99.

The PlayStation Mobile publisher license is available in Japan, US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Australia.

Sony is also preparing to accept applications from developers based in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Once developers have created their games, they can submit them to Sony Computer Entertainment and sell them wholesale at a price of their choosing. Sony will then set the retail price for consumers.

An example given by the console giant was the wholesale price could be set by the developer at $0.69, with SCE then setting the retail price to around $0.99.

Games and applications cannot be completely free however, as the store will be limited to paid and freemium content.

PlayStation Mobile officially went live at the beginning of October with a launch lineup of 21 games featuring titles such as Vlambeer’s Super Crate Box and Crash Labs’ puzzle action Twist Pilot.

Compatible devices with the cross-platform gaming service currently include Xperia smartphones, the Sony Tablet S and P and HTC smartphone One S, X and V.
