Vita and Sony phones get one less hurdle for game developers

Sony removes $99 PlayStation mobile publishing fee

The $99 PlayStation Mobile fee required to publish games to Sony’s mobile and Vita platforms has been removed.

As the platform holder announced a new Indie section on the Playstation Store, Sony is trying to remove any barriers to getting developers interested in its platforms.

"As you saw with our recent Indie Arcade event at GDC, we’re always looking to support new developer talent, so we’ve decided to waive the $99 publisher license fee for PlayStation Mobile, which means you can bring your games to PlayStation Vita or any PlayStation-certified device free of cost," reads a post on the official PlayStation blog.

Games will still be subject to Sony’s approval process but with Microsoft and Apple still charging fees for game submission this could give the company an edge it has lacked in the fight to attract new talent to its mobile and handheld platforms.

The move also comes on the back of the news that Sony has introduced a new indie game section on to the PlayStation Store, designed to help developers gain extra exposure and showcast their PS3 and Vita titles.

“I’m delighted that the indie devs have really taken advantage of how open PlayStation is to this tremendous mix of designs and ideas, and that we’re happy to work with everything from traditional buy-and-play games, to free-to-play,” he said.
