Sony on course to beat goal of 5 million consoles by end of March

Sony sells 4.2m PS4s

Sony has sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles as of December 28, claims Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO.

The news, revealed at the company’s Consumer Electronics Show keynote, comes a day after Microsoft announced that over 3 million Xbox One units were sold in 2013.

This gives a slight edge to the PS4, which launched on November 15 in the US and November 29 in Europe, over the Xbox One which launched in both regions on November 22.

These figures make it likely that Sony will beat its stated goal of selling 5 million consoles by the end of March.

Sony later released a set of facts claiming 9.7 PlayStation 4 games had been sold, both at retail and via digital download.
