Square Enix is to open mobile development studios in India and Mexico to tap into the growing interest in mobile gaming in the regions.
Square plans to focus on “newly developed mobile content” in order to attract customers in these markets, according to GamesIndustry.biz.
A statement from Squre Enix read: “We have set up offices in Latin America (Mexico) and India as we see good potential in both markets. Specifically, we are looking to secure early entry into each market with newly developed mobile content. It’s relatively early days for us there and we’ll keep you updated.”
So far, no further information has been given on staff or who will lead the studios.
There are 19 million active smart devices in India, which represents a huge grow opportunity.
Having culturally relevant content will be important if Square aims to grow its business in these markets. In Develop’s look at the Brazilian social and mobile games market, games such as Favela Wars are popular with its native audience.
