Steam Machines not exclusive to Nvidia graphics tech

Valve’s Steam Machines will not exclusively house Nvidia graphics technology, the digital distribution giant has confirmed.

Last week Valve revealed the 300 prototype machines being sent out to Steam users would include varying specs, housing either an Nvidia Titan GPU, GTX780, GTX760 or GTX660.

Speaking to Maximum PC, Valve’s Doug Lombardi said despite heavy use of Nvidia tech in the test hardware, future systems would also include graphics hardware created by AMD and Intel.

He added the Half-Life developer had been working closely with all three companies as it prepares to launch its hardware and new SteamOS.

“Last week, we posted some technical specs of our first wave of Steam Machine prototypes,” said Lombardi.

“Although the graphics hardware that we’ve selected for the first wave of prototypes is a variety of Nvidia cards, that is not an indication that Steam Machines are Nvidia-only. In 2014, there will be Steam Machines commercially available with graphics hardware made by AMD, Nvidia, and Intel. Valve has worked closely together with all three of these companies on optimising their hardware for SteamOS, and will continue to do so into the foreseeable future.”
