Epic makes surprise hint that Gears 3 wonâ??t be built on Unreal 3 tech

Unreal Engine 4 set for next gen

Epic has invested seven years of development time in the Unreal Engine 4, but the game platform will not arrive until the next generation of consoles.

That was the pledge made by Epic Games president Michael Capps during a speech at the Tokyo Game Show.

"We’re very concerned that the next generation will be massively parallel and most engines won’t be able to adapt for that," said Capps at the press conference, as quoted by Eurogamer.

Capps also surprised attendees by claiming that the next Gears of War title would likely be released on the next generation of consoles.

“If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation, whenever that is. If someone knows, please tell me! That’s about four or five years away, I think."

He later clarified that this would only be the case if Gears of War 3 was built on Unreal Engine 4.

Elsewhere during the conference, Capps announced the studio will be opening a new Tokyo office.
