Publisher Bethesda releases free in-browser edition to celebrate historic shooter

VIDEO: Carmack releases Wolfenstein dev commentary

Id Software co-founder John Carmack has released a director’s commentary for the original Wolfenstein to mark the game’s twentieth anniversary.

Carmack, who is the only Id Software co-founder still working with the company, talks through the development of the seminal FPS in the video below.

In further commemoration to the game’s legacy, a free web browser edition of Wofenstein 3D has also been released, here, though at the time of going to press there appears to be problems loading the web page.

Carmack established Id Software in 1991 along with John Romero, Adrian Carmack (not related) and Tom Hall.

The Texas studio’s first commercial product was a platform game called Commander Keen, though Wolfenstein 3D proved to be the group’s breakthrough hit.

Zenimax media acquired Id Software in 2009.
