VIDEO: Miyamoto shares his level design secrets

Shigeru Miyamoto, the legendary game designer, has shared the secrets behind one of gaming’s most iconic levels: Super Mario Bros’ World 1-1.

Mario’s first outing as a 2D platformer was released 30 years ago, and in the build-up to this week’s release of Super Mario Maker, Eurogamer released this excellent video in which Miyamoto explains how the first level was designed to teach players how to play the game.

In the footage below, the creator of Mario reveals the origins of the Goomba, the way Nintendo forced players to pick up that first mushroom, the decisions behind the bottomless pits and the incentive of collecting coins.
