Elite Dangerous named as Oculus Rift launch title

Any lingering questions about Elite Dangerous’ support for Oculus Rift have been answered.

The space sim has been named as an official launch title for the headset. Furthermore, as well as supporting cross-platform play for the VR, PC and console versions, existing owners will get the VR version for free.

It had appeared in January that Oculus support was not as certain as it once was. Not only had Rift updates become less frequent, but Frontier issued a statement saying it was focusing” on HTC Vive Steam VR.

Braben himself reacted badly to the interpretation of the statement, and the studio insisted that it was still working closely with Oculus – which now has been proven to be the case.

Ars reports that Elite Dangerous will now appear on the Oculus Rift store with a brand new launch headset version, alongside its current availability on Steam and directly from Frontier. A console version is also available on Xbox One, and it is already compatible with HTC Vive.

There’s been no official word yet on either a PS4 version or a possible PlayStation VR release.
