OpTic Gaming scores big win at Call of Duty World League Championship 2017

OpTic Gaming last night emerged as the winners of the Call of Duty World League Championship 2017, claiming a lion’s share of the $1.5m purse, one of the biggest prize pools in console gaming.

OpTic, known as The Green Wall to their fans, beat out Team EnVyUs for the win in a fierce weekend of matches that draws Call of Duty’s competitive season to a close.

Matthew ‘FormaL’ Piper also earned the MVP for the championship. “This does not feel real at all. I feel like a legend with my teammates,” Piper said, after receiving the award.

The tournament took place in Orlando, Florida and saw the world’s top ranked 32 Call of Duty teams from NA, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region — known as APAC — together for a five day fragfest that decided not just a $1.5m championship prize pool, but also acted as a finale for the year’s CWL season, which offered a total of $4m throughout the year.

This was a big year for Call of Duty esports, with a year-on-year increase of 400% in participation. Splyce also distinguished themselves this year as the first ever European team to win a CWL event in North America.
