World of Warcraft eSports gets a big boost for 2017

Blizzard has announced a big boost to the competitive World of Warcraft scene with a massive $280,000 prize pool for the World Championships. 

Warcraft Arena eSports has kept growing over recent years, with big name organisations such as Splyce entering the scene. This has seen the community grow significantly and as a result Blizzard are investing even further into the competitive community. 

The 2017 season will see Europe and NA get five qualifying events, each with a $6,000 prize pool. Doing well in these events will also earn points, and the teams with the most points will head to the regional qualifiers. The top four teams from this regional event will make it to the world championships. These regional events will also have $100,000 on the line. 

There will also be open qualifiers, meaning literally anyone can sign up and compete for their share of the massive prize pool. 

With this kind of financial backing from Blizzard the scene should only grow, meaning this year could be the year that World of Warcraft finally breaks into the higher tiers of viewing numbers outside of the world championship.
