Blizzard announces StarCraft Remastered

After months of rumours and speculation Blizzard has finally confirmed that it is working on a remaster of the original StarCraft and its Brood War expansion.

Blizzard president Mike Morhaime made the announcement over in Korea, where Brood War was the catalyst for the start of the major eSports boom in the country, and fans were understandably very happy.

The remaster will not change the gameplay or balance of the original title and will even even allow cross play with original versions. All that will change in the remaster are the visuals, audio and matchmaking. The remaster is set to launch this summer.

If summer is too long to wait to get your Brood War on, Blizzard will be releasing the original StarCraft and Brood War for free this week, along with a new patch.

“StarCraft is a pure distillation of Blizzard’s DNA—its story, its balance, and all the little details reflect our long-running commitment to epic entertainment, and it’s been a staple in competitive gaming and esports for almost 20 years," said Morhaime. “With StarCraft: Remastered, we’re modernizing the original game’s visuals, audio, and online support to ensure that players can enjoy StarCraft for another 20 years and beyond.”
