Smash Melee reportedly coming to the Nintendo Switch

A report from Eurogamer suggests that the upcoming Nintendo Switch console will be able to play GameCube games, one of which is Smash Melee.

The report from Tom Phillips says that the Switch will be the first Nintendo console that features GameCube games on the Virtual Console. One of the games that is currently being prepped for launch is Super Smash Bros. Melee, a game that is still played competitively 15 years after it launched.

If this report turns out to be true this could see the end of the massive CRT TV’s at events. Presumably this would see the entire scene switch over to the Switch, especially as the report also mentions that Nintendo are currently trying to get Wii U’s GameCube controller adaptor to work on the Switch, although that is not confirmed to be happening. If it does it seems highly likely competitive Melee would be played on the Switch and would make running events a lot easier.

The report also states that both Super Mario Sunshine and Luigi’s Mansion are also working on the Switch, with Animal Crossing being the next game in line for the Virtual Console treatment.
