Is Amazon the next to enter the Android console market?

Word on the digital street this morning is that retail giant Amazon could be on the verge of a spectacular entry to the console market.

GameInformer reports that ‘sources’ have told it Amazon is currently developing an Android based console that is due for release by the end of the year.

According to those we spoke with who have knowledge of the in-development hardware, Amazon will be leveraging the titles already available on its platform,” the site reads.

Each day, the company offers one productivity or game app for free and stocks a healthy library for its own devices, like the Kindle Fire. The console will also have its own, dedicated controller.”

Amazon already has a firm content base to grow from, of course, thanks to the success of its Amazon App Store. It’s also dabbled in hardware via its Kindle e-reader and Kindle tablet ranges.
