‘Live-action and animation hybrid’ Sonic movie still in the works

Sega has re-confirmed a new big-screen outing for its iconic blue hedgehog.

Speaking to The World Folio, as spotted by Nintendo Life, Sega Sammy president and CEO Hajime Satomi said:

Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.”

It’s the first we’ve heard of Sonic’s potential new cinema outing since 2014. Back then it was also described as a collaboration with Sony pictures and was described as a mix of CGI and live-action.

Late last year Nintendo also suggested that it was open to potentially licensing out its rich stable of IP for a movie.
