EA ditches SecuROM on BFBC2

In its latest update for PC shooter Battlefield: Bad Company 2 publisher EA has, amongst other tweaks to the game, removed the controversial and unpopular SecuROM DRM from the game.

However, as Shacknews notes, the change applies only to the version of the game sold via Valve’s Steam network.

EA already has a colourful history with the DRM tool. It first ran into trouble when bundling SecuROM with Spore – an argument that eventually lead to a US court battle.

It has since introduced and then dropped the tool from titles such as The Sims 3 and Mass Effect 2.

SecuROM does have its supporters, however, with its most notable supporter probably being Japanese publisher Capcom.
