Sony in discussions over ITV Player

ITV hopes to have a PS3-specific version of the ITV Player available for Sony’s console by September, a report in The Telegraph claims.

The report claims that the service would be supported by advertising meaning that the PS3 is its only possible outlet on current consoles – Nintendo will not allow advertising-funded products and Microsoft would want to charge for the app.

The PS3 is just one of the technologies ITV is targeting. Tomorrow will see the launch of a live TV web app for the iPhone that will be advertised as part of the network’s World Cup offer.

ITV is also in talks with Apple, Blackberry and Google Android.

ITV is trying to get its content onto every platform and having ITV Player, its 30-day catch up service, available on the key smartphone devices, is an incredibly important part of the broadcaster’s digital strategy,” an anonymous source claimed.

There will be a one-off payment for the app, and the app will be populated on a daily basis with new content which will be continually supported by advertising.”

An ITV spokesman added: Viewers are consuming content on a range of platforms to suit their lifestyles so we want to make our content available when and where consumers want to watch it. We are considering options for this as part of our ongoing strategic review.”
