Pokemon X & Y sell 4m in opening weekend

Nintendo has revealed some impressive sales numbers for Pokemon X & Y’s opening weekend.

The games – the first entries in the Pokemon series on 3DS – sold 4m units between them on Saturday October 12th and Sunday October 13th.

And Friday October 11th in the UK.

The impressive number is a new record for the series, although of course that is largely to do with the fact that it’s the first time a new Pokemon entry has released simultaneously worldwide.

The pair also became the fastest selling 3DS games of all time.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said: The early response to Pokemon X and Pokemon Y not only reaffirms the ongoing passion of Pokemon fans, but also indicates that an entirely new generation of gamers is eager to experience the franchise for itself.”

The Pokemon series has now sold over 245m copies worldwide. Here are some release-specific sales stats:

  • Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (DS) 17.63m
  • Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire (GBA) 16.22m
  • Pokemon Black/White (DS) 15.42m
  • Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver (DS) 12.67m
  • Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen (GBA) 12m
