Ubisoft reportedly softens PC DRM

It looks as if Ubisoft might have dropped its controversial internet-dependent DRM used on some of its key PC titles.

PC Gamer reports that some gamers have posted pictures of titles such as Assassin’s Creed II and Splinter Cell: Conviction working perfectly well without being connected to Ubisoft’s servers.

The publisher irked a number of gamers last year by introducing the controversial DRM which saw some titles requiring constant authentication via Ubisoft’s servers. This included a number of predominantly single player titles.

In fact, so vehement was the backlash that Ubisoft’s servers even came under attack from outraged users who had previously been unable to play titles such as Settlers 7 due to tech issues.

MCV has contacted Ubisoft for clarification.
