Star Trek Online scraps console plans

The chances of recently released MMO Star Trek Online making the expected trip to consoles have been drastically cut following Cryptic Studios’ admission that its console project is currently on the back burner”.

The announcement paints an even bleaker picture for consoles MMOs and follows the confirmation that Cryptic’s superhero title Champions Online will not be making the expected trip to Xbox 360.

Star Trek online is pretty much in the same boat as the Champions console version right now,” Cryptic boss Jack Emmert told Videogamer.

It’s something we can readily do in terms of technology. We’ve had it up and running on certain consoles, and had plans and designs in order to take advantage of those platforms. But as it stands right now it’s a little difficult to make that final leap on the business side of things.

So, currently, just like Champions, the console version of Star Trek Online is on the back burner.”

The current generation of machines isn’t without its MMOs, of course. Xbox 360 is home to the likes of Sega’s Phantasy Star Universe and Square Enix’s Final Fantasy XI, and PS3 owners have both SOE’s The Agency and Final Fantasy XIV to look forward to.
