Heavy Metal Machines is getting its own university tournament

Free-to-play car-combat MOBA Heavy Metal Machines is to star in its very first university tournament.

It will take place in Brazil’s Florianópolis, the home city of developer Hoplon, on November 11th.

The tournament will take the form of a college championship at Universidade do Vale do Itajaí. Hoplon has held tournaments before across Europe and South America, but this is the first to be university based.

Hoplon has partnered with Razer for the events, with Razer goodies being offered up for prizes. The competition is open to both students and teachers. If successful, the model could be rolled out to other regions.

“What a better place to start our first university tournament than in our home city?” head of marketing and publishing Tatiana Moreira said. “We decided to kick off our first tournament here in order to support local talent and give the people of Florianópolis the opportunity to show that this is a burgeoning area for gaming and esports.

“This will be the first of many as we make plans to hold further university tournaments around Europe and South America.”

Hoplon was founded in 2000. Its team currently numbers some 70 developers. Its previous titles include Apocalypse: The Party’s Over and Taikodom.
