Director Katsuhiro Harada explains: ‘We don't want to split these communities, so a good window in which to release is something that's become difficult recently'

Tekken x Street Fighter development frozen after six years for the sake of fans

The next crossover between two of the biggest fighting game franchises of all time has been put on hold to allow fans of the genre to enjoy their time with already released titles.

Tekken x Street Fighter (that’s ‘cross’) was announced as being in development at Bandai Namco back in 2010, and was planned as a follow-up to sister title Street Fighter x Tekken (pictured).

However, four years after that game hit shelves, there has been little news about the collaboration, leading GameSpot to ask Tekken game director Katsuhiro Harada about progression on the project.

“When we develop fighting games, we try to keep the core community in mind as well as the wider audience that wants to play these games,” he responded.

“But currently the situation is with fighting games, you have Street Fighter V that just released – a lot of people are playing that fervently – and there’s a large crowd out there waiting for Tekken 7.

“We don’t want to split these communities, so a good window in which to release Tekken x Street Fighter is something that’s become difficult recently. So it’s on hold for the moment.”

The studio recently released Pokken Tournament as a separate joint effort with Nintendo, while Tekken 7 is awaiting its transition from Japanese arcades to the PS4 later this year.
