Finnish tech firm developing new tech and hiring more staff

Umbra nets $3.4 million in funding

3D graphics optimisation outfit Umbra has closed a $3.4 million Series A funding round.

The firm plans to use the investment to further develop its new tech for streaming and rendering 3D content in real-time, on any device.

It’s built upon its existing 3D visibility solution to increase rendering performance in games, such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but the company now hopes to branch out into other areas as well, including architectural planning, construction engineering, digital maps and simulations.

To support its development, Umbra is also using the funding to hire new staff. Vacancies include senior tools programmer, junior programmer, senior graphics programmer, lead backend developer and head of PR and marketing.

Investors in the firm included Inventure, Lifeline Ventures, Initial Capital and a number of angel investors.

“We’re expanding our technology to enable storing, streaming and rendering of massive 3D data sets,” said Umbra CEO Otso Mäkinen.

“We already have a functional prototype that will be first released on top of game engines such as Unity and Unreal. Our goal is to make 3D available for everyone in the future.”
