Layoffs hit Elite: Dangerous developer Frontier

Elite: Dangerous developer Frontier Developments has laid off staff at its Cambridge and Nova Scotia studios.

15 employees in “content creation” roles have been made redundant at its UK office, while development is being moved away from its Canada branch, effectively closing the studio.

The company said it had laid off staff to focus on Elite: Dangerous and its newly announced Coaster Park Tycoon.

Frontier opened its Nova Scotia development studio in 2012 in what was its first ever expansion. Just over a year later in November 2013, Frontier confirmed to Develop it had terminated the contracts of five staff at the office. At the time COO David Walsh said the company was still committed to growing the studio.

In February last year, Frontier signed two deals to make new games with a global publisher for a combined value of £3.75m.

With its focus now on self-published franchises, it’s not clear if these contracts are still ongoing.
