GameSessions brings PC game rentals to retail

Former PlayStation Europe boss Chris Deering last night fronted the official unveiling of a new games retail service at GDC.

It’s called GameSessions and it hopes to place cards into retail that consumers purchase to acquire rental rights for PC titles.

These physical cards allow retailers to benefit from the growth in PC gaming without having to service a full PC section within their stores,” the company says. By offering the GameSessions cards to their consumers, retailers also help gamers discover and access great games, while showing their commitment to the PC audience, which has seen its retail options shrink over the last five years.”

Once purchased, users can redeem their codes on GameSessions.com and receive their free super-fast download of the full game”. Once a rental period has expired users are free to extend their rental period or buy the game outright.

Codemasters – a former employer of Deering – has already been named as its first partner.

Said Deering: Retailers have been looking for ways to participate in the sale and distribution of digital games for the past several years and GameSessions Cards are an innovative way to do just that.”

As well as naming Deering as chairman, industry legend Ian Livingstone is also involved in the project.
