Publisher takes on studio's 46 employees, tech and other assets

Ubisoft acquires Digital Chocolate Barcelona

Ubisoft has acquired Digital Chocolate’s 46-person Barcelona studio.

As part of the deal, TechCrunch reports the publisher will also take on the branch’s IP and technology. Ubisoft will not however be purchasing any of Digital Chocolate’s other assets.

Digital Chocolate was formed by EA founder Trip Hawkins in 2003 to focus on developing games for PC and mobile.

The company has cdeveloped titles such as ZOmbie Lane, Army Attack, Millionaire City, Kings & Warlords and Galaxy Life.

In recent times the company has struggled however, and last year the firm was said to have laid off 180 staff from its offices in India, San Mateo, Russia and elsewhere across the globe. The firm has since also closed a number of its studios too.

In May 2012, Hawkins also left the company before re-emerging in January this year with his new educational game studio in London called If You Can.
