Certification process could also be overhauled to offer faster approvals

Report: Microsoft to greenlight self-publishing on Xbox One

Microsoft it set to allow developers to self-publish on the Xbox One, according to a report.

Multiple sources have told Game Informer that the computing giant is set to make a U-turn on its publishing strategy, and allow indies to release their own games.

Microsoft will allegedly now allow developers to set their own pricing and release games at a date of their choosing.

It has also been claimed that the certification process has been overhauled, with Microsoft aiming at a 14-day turnaround for approvals. This comes after the company dropped update charges for Xbox 360 developers earlier this year.

Redmond Game Studios and Platforms GM Matt Booty had previously said, at least for the time-being, indies would not be able to self-publish on the Xbox One, sparking outrage in some quarters on the restrictions imposed on developers who weren’t looking to work with a publisher.

If true, the U-turn would mark another big reversal on Microsoft next-gen strategies, having recently ditched its daily online check-in requirements and used game policies.
