Miyamoto: Our 09 games werent fun enough

Games, at the most basic level, are meant to be fun – and industry legend and head of Nintendo development Shigeru Miyamoto has admitted that the company’s games output last year was simply not fun enough.

The fact that in 2009 we were not able to sell more than we did in 2008 was simply that in comparison, we were not able to produce fun-enough products,” he told The Economist.

There are always ups and downs in this business. As long as we create unique and unprecedented experiences with videogames, there should be nothing to worry about.”

The confession follows that of Nintendo’s American president Reggie Fils-Aime that the publisher is not good” at creating core games for the modern audience.

In another interview with ONM, Miyamoto added that before he considers calling it a day in games development he still has one big ambition – to get gaming into every single household.

What I’ll be doing ten years from now, I have no idea. All I can say is that I like being a snowball. Year after year I like to keep piling up ideas and know-how and experiences.

One thing I’m sure I’d like to be working on is our efforts to make games accessible for everybody, so that every single household can take for granted that there is a game console in their house.”
